In fact I would suggest that your machines are at greater risk without SP2. When these were updated the seeming SP related problems went away. There are security features that most "professionals" have yet to enable or take advantage of. Poor planning is usually and indication that one is a poor engineer. I have heard of the same problem with XP SP2 and have been advised that I have to manage the networks myself as opposed to ticking the "Let windows manage my wireless networks" box in the advanced tab of the networking window.
